Feng Zhang, PhD

2019 NIPTE Rising Star Scholar

Feng is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Molecular Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery at the College of Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ph.D. training in Industrial Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin. Feng worked for 14 years at PharmaForm and Gilead Sciences before joining academia in 2014. His current research focuses on the application of twin-screw extrusion in advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing including continuous granulation and amorphous solid dispersions.

Feng’s publications and research is evidence to his dedication to industrial pharmacy. Since 2014, he has published 37 peer-reviewed journal articles, and coauthored 3 book chapters. He is the editor of the 2nd edition of “Pharmaceutical Extrusion Technology.”

Feng is the associate editor of the Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology and he serves on the editorial board of AAPS PharmSci-Tech. He invented thermally-processed PEO matrix tablets for extended release. The proprietary technology was applied in the reformulated OxyContin ER tablets. Feng invented micro-beads DELEXIS™ drug delivery platform. JORNAY PM™ capsule, extended-release methylphenidate HCl for evening dosing, was approved in 2018.

Feng is very passionate about teaching both Pharm.D. and Ph.D. students. He was nominated by Pharm.D. students for Excellence in Teaching award two years in a row. Feng also put tremendous effort in training Ph.D. students. He has graduate students’ best interest at heart. He puts a lot of emphasis in graduate students’ research, communication, and people skills.
